What I ♥ & What I Don’t So Much ♥ about Ottawa’s Museum of Civilization

I love the building, designed by Canadian Douglas Cardinal. From the outside, with its sweeping stone curves snaking low across the landscape…

…with the long swaying grasses, native to the Prairies…

…and the interior of the building: totems…

…Alex Janvier’s magnificent painted domed ceiling “Morning Star” – all of which I couldn’t fit into my camera (you can watch a video on the creation of the painting on the CBC Digital Archives)…

….the views to the outside: Parliament Buildings and river…

… but I do not love this relief map…

It was too basic, too static, too spare for the diversity and richness that are the Canadian provinces and territories today. Yesterday’s history’s stereotypes and icons… not enough for me. Here’s Alberta:

That’s it? Really now. So I had an idea for Canada’s 150th birthday – relax, it’s not until 2017 (I should live so long) –  an interactive digital and physical map/tapestry that reflects as much of Canada as could be encompassed by such a work. People could tell their stories, their families’ stories. It would be like Expo 67’s Arbre du peuple/People Tree…

…brought into the 21st century. I imagine it would be an amazing collaboration of visionaries, writers, artists, and computer adepts across the fields of graphic design, programming, audio, post production… you name it. Wish I was creative. *sigh*

About Esmé Comfort

My husband Jim and I moved to the Bow Valley in 1980, settling in Canmore in 1983. Both my children were born in Canmore and attended K -12 in Canadian Rockies Public Schools District (CRPS), French Immersion. For the past six years I served as vice-chair of the board. Alberta Government support to the CRPS Inspiring Hearts & Minds initiative created opportunities for provincial, national and international outreach. In the past I held positions on the Canmore Daycare Board, the preschool board, and various school councils/PACs; I served as president of the local chapter of Canadian Parents for French for five years and sat on the provincial board for two. I currently sit on the board of the Canmore Folk Music Festival, work full time at an events management firm and edit, copy-edit and proofread on contract. My husband and I ran a small main street business for 18 years: supply and install floor wall and window coverings.
